A stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.

Strokes are a medical emergency and urgent treatment is essential.

The sooner a person receives treatment for a stroke, the less damage is likely to happen.

Symptoms:

  • Face weakness
  • Arm weakness
  • Problems with speech
  • Blurred vision
  • Feeling dizzy/falling over
  • Severe headache

Causes:

  • Aged 50 or over
  • Recently given birth
  • Migraines
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • From a Black/South Asian background

Treatment/Recovery:

Within 24 hours, you could receive medication to get rid of blood clots in the brain. Instead of this, you may receive surgery to get rid of a blood clot or they will carry out a procedure to stop a build up of pressure inside the skull/brain.

Recovery can take months or years depending on the person. You may have to make adaptations to your lifestyle or home to assist recovery. Stopping work or having adjusted hours/responsibilities is another part of recovery.
